Because not everyone has a knack for writing , composing essays may come as a challenge for some individuals. Unfortunately, essay writing is one of those academic tasks that students must accomplish well. But how should one start writing an essay? Billy Dean, a columnist, shares, “There’s always a starting point in writing, and that’s called planning.” He said that even for experienced writers like himself, they still plan what to write and how to write their piece. They don’t just blather about anything out of the blue.
4 Basic Tips On How To Write An Essay
List down a few interesting topics and see if there’s enough sources related to it. Although essays showcase a personal point of view, a well thought out one present a wide range of ideas and examples, which is verifiable. The best way to present great ideas is to read and quote sources, which can be found in online news, published books or journals. However, these sources must have enough authority to become credible. That being said, using Wikipedia, might not be a good idea.
Create an outline. Dean notes that it is important to ask questions when making an outline, like, “In which direction are you leading your essay to? What are the important components or points that you want to communicate across?” The outline serves as a guide on how the essay flows. It helps writers organize their thoughts. Dean said that it is easier to decide on a structure when a writer could answer the questions, what, who, when, where, why and how. “It’s very basic, but once a writer knows the answer to these questions, then it’d be easier for him to write his essay.”
Draft the thesis statement. Kori Morgan from Demand Media, says, “A thesis statement is a sentence, usually located at the end of the first or second paragraph, that explains the essay’s main point. Without a clear thesis statement it can be more difficult to structure and organize your ideas. One good tactic is to draft your thesis statement before you begin writing the body of the essay…”
Don’t forget proper citations. A strong essay is able to quote authoritative sources. When a writer does this, it shows the level of research and knowledge he has over the topic he’s presenting. It also provides a solid support to his claims in his essay. However, writers should not, at all cost, try to own other people’s ideas, because that would be plagiarism. This is where proper citation is needed. Citing sources gives more authority to statements, but it also give proper credit to the author of the idea that’s being quoted.
Dean suggests to consult with a professor or with someone who is expert in writing when it doubt. “Writing is a skill than can be learned through experience,” according to Dean. Essay writing is only difficult when one thinks of it as an impossible task. “As soon as an individual tries to do his initial research, he’ll realize that it’s actually not that difficult to write essays,” according to Dean.
